Ignacio Elected Football Captain; Farneti, Waldstein Win Trophies

By R. W. D.

Junior defensive back Dave Ignacio was elected captain of the 1971 Harvard football team yesterday afternoon at a meeting of this year's varsity lettermen.

The announcement of his election was made last night at the annual football dinner at the Harvard Club of Boston.

About 500 alumni, coaches and players gathered to hear Ignacio, outgoing captain Gary Farneti, and retiring coach John Yovicsin mull over the prospects for future seasons and reflect on this year's 7-2 performance, which climaxed Saturday with a victory over Yale.

The two major football awards-the Frederick Greeley Crocker Memorial Trophy and the William P. LaCroix Memorial Trophy-were presented to Farneti and senior center Tom Waldstein.

Farneti received the Crocker award as the Crimson's most valuable player, while Waldstein-who was lost for the season in the Penn game with torn cartlleges-was presented the LaCroix award "for his enthusiasm for the game and his spirit for the team."

Yovicsin was given a going-away present by the team-a portrait of himself which appeared on the cover of the Dartmouth program. He was introduced by President Pusey, who managed to put a damper on an otherwise inebriated evening with a philosophical digression on education, society and intercollegiate football.

"I thank you for Harvard." Pusey said.

Yovicsin made a brief speech, thanking many people and expressing the hope that the Harvard football program will continue to thrive. "This is the boys' party," he ended, "and I want to join it."
