Matmen to Face Improved Bruins

Harvard's varsity wrestling team opens its Ivy League season tonight in Providence, against a much improved Brown squad.

The Crimson won its first match of the year 20-13 against Wesleyan last Saturday but its performance was lackadaisical. "We may have taken them too lightly," assistant coach Bob Fehrs said later.

Tonight, Harvard can not afford to be overconfident. Brown won its first meet of the season last week 23-16 over the University of Rhode Island.

"They are usually not in the best condition but they do have decent personnel," coach John Lee said, appraising the Bruins. "We whaled 'em last year. they were the only team we really routed." he added.

The Crimson beat Brown 27-13 last season when the Bruins finished with a 1-6 record and a 6-10-1 overall mark.

This year the Bruins are experienced and possess good depth in the heavier weight classes. They are paced by junior co-captain Frank Walsh. Walsh went to the second round of NCAA finals last year in the heavyweight division and finished the year with a 12-3-1 record.

His match against Harvard's Tom Tripp should prove to be the best of the meet. Tripp is 3-0 this season, recording two impressive pins in the Greater Boston Collegiate Wrestling Tournament and decisioning his Wesleyan opponent, 6-1.
