Hockey Team Rips St. Nick's; Local Line Stars in 10-3 Win

By Evan W. Thomas

Harvard's hockey team coasted past an under-manned, out-of-shape St. Nick's team last night, 10-3, in an exhibition game played before bored parents and a few hard-core, drunken fans in Section 18.

The Crimson's "Local Line" staged a scoring exhibition in the first period, but Harvard cooled off after jumping to a 5-0 lead in the first twelve minutes of play.

Hampe's Dribbles

Leif Rosenberger scored Harvard's first goal at 4:38 of the first, shoveling the puck into an empty net after defenseman Kevin Hampe's shot had dribbled through the legs of the St. Nick's goalie. Harvard's all-junior line of Dave Hynes, Bob McManama, and Billy Corkery unwound moments later, picking up four goals in less than five minutes.

McManama fed Hynes for the Crimson's second goal, and 28 seconds later assisted Corkery to put Harvard up by three. Hynes' quick shot converted a nice pass by Andy Burns at 12:00, and McManama ended the scoring for the period with a similar flick shot after picking up a loose puck in front of the St. Nick's net.

St. Nick's held off the Crimson for half the second period while picking up a garbage goal of their own. McManama put Harvard back on the track with a tipin of a Burns shot, however, and Bob Goodenow and Larry Desmond scored in rapid succession to widen the gap to 8-1.

Sophomore Goodenow's goal, his first as a varsity player, came off of a nice rush and feed by defenseman Bob Muse. Desmond, an ex-JV player skating on the fourth line, scored on a tip-in of sophomore Dave Hands's shot.

St. Nick's twelve man team looked thoroughly exhausted in the third period, but despite numerous chances, Harvard came up with only two more goals. Both were scored by fourth line center, Craig Thomas, another sophomore playing in his first varsity game.

Harvard's goalies turned away a total of 16 shots, while St. Nick's shell-shocked goalie. Kevin Kennedy, made 46 saves. McManama was the scoring leader with four points, and Corkery, Hynes, and Desmond all picked up three points.
