Dr. Lester Grinspoon, director of research at Massachusetts Mental Health Center, called for the legalization of marijuana yesterday, saying that it is less harmful than cigarettes.
Speaking at a Winthrop House seminam on drugs, Grinspoon said, "People use cuphoriants as a tension-reliever. Cannabis does not produce as much dependence as alcohol, another euphoriant."
He said that conceptions of marijuana as medically harmful are myths. "There is no more evidence that cannabis is psychogenic than alcohol is. Cannabis may be a precipitant of bad effects for those with weak ego structures, but so are many other things," he
