In a surprise vote last night, the Cambridge School Committee appointed Francis J. Frisoli '35 permanent superintendent of the Cambridge school system.

Frisoli has been acting superintendent since June of 1970.

The 5-2 vote climaxed several months of controversy over the appointment of a permanent superintendent. The School Committee had agreed last June to conduct a nationwide search to fill the post, and to involve students, parents and experts in education in the selection process.

Committeeman James F. Fitzgerald has fought vociferously for Frisoli's immediate appointment all along, and clashed repeatedly with parents and teachers who favored a more cautious selection procedure.

Before last night's vote the Committee had been reviewing more than 200 applications it had received for the post.
