With the three biggest matches of the season looming ahead next week. Harvard tennis opens its regular season today against M.I.T. with several question marks due to injuries and illness. The team travels to Brown on Thursday, but it is the Saturday match against Williams which will determine just how realistic Harvard's hopes for the Ivy League championship are.
Coach Jack Barnaby feels that he has found a solid third doubles team in sophomores Peter Briggs and Randy Barnett, whom he called "the most outstanding player on the Southern trip."
But Barnaby is still apprehensive about the first two doubles teams. Dick Berner, who is slated to play with captain Bill Washauer, was unable to make the Southern trip and has been sick the past few days with the flu. "If Berner isn't able to play, I'll put one of four possibilities in with Washauer, but I'll have to drop that team to third doubles," Barnaby said.
Washauer is testing his knee after a January operation: and Barnaby is worried that a hockey shoulder injury might affect Joe Cavanagh's game. "I think much too much has been made of this injury." Cavanagh said. "It bothers me a little with overheads, but otherwise I'm playing fine."
Today's match against M.I.T. will start at 3 p.m. at the courts next to Soldiers' Field.
