Dunster Dramatists Get Special Rights To Put On 'Lenny'

The Dunster House Drama Society is the first amateur group in the country to receive rights to Leany a play about the late comedian Lenny Bruce.

The Drama Society is paying $450 for the rights to the show, which were received in mid-October. The December production will be the Boston premiere, and will be the first run outside of New York and Los Angeles.

"It is very unusual for these to release the rights to an amateur group before they've really gone on tour." Bob Briggs '73, the producer, said. The play, writers by Julian Barry, was performed for over a year at New York's Brooks Atkinson Theater. Its company has since moved to Los Angeles.

Al Franken '73, a professional stand-up comedian, will appear as Leany. Franken wrote and directed "Nixonl." which the Drama Society produced last year. Victor Budnick, a second-year Law student, will direct Lenny.

Franken spoke to Marvin Worth, a producer at 20th Century Fox, several times before he was allowed rights to the play.
