Springfield Trims Cagers in Overtime

SPRINGFIELD--Springfield College defeated Harvard's basketball team last night in overtime, 84-82, on a layup with 3 seconds left by Chief co-captain Joel Goldson.

Goldson was a one-man show, finishing with 38 points on 16 for 28 from the floor and 6 for 6 from the foul line.

No Time

Harvard's Lou Silver called time out after Goldson's layup but the officials ruled the Crimson would only have a fraction of the last second to try to tie the game. A full-court in bounds pass from Silver to Bill Cary went away as the buzzer sounded.

Dr. James Naismith, who invented basketball here in the 1890s, would have been proud. The estimated crowd of 1000 was treated to masterful coaching by Harvard's Satch Sanders and Springfield's Ed Bilik.

Bilik had his team stall near the end of regulation time and in the overtime period. With 32 seconds remaining in regulation time and the score at 70-70, Bilik had his team stall until 15 seconds remained. Harvard recovered the ball with :05 to go. Sanders utilized his time-outs perfectly, but Artie Needleman was left with the ball and no shot as time ran out.

In the overtime period, with the score again knotted, this time at 82-82, Springfield dribble-stalled until 17 seconds remained. Goldson's game-winning drive came with three seconds to go.

"We didn't play ball in the second half," Sanders said in the locker room afterwards. Sanders praised Goldson as a "good player" but said "we made him look like All-American material."

Harvard tried using a zone throughout the game. "That was the thing we thought would work against these guys," Sanders said.

The zone worked effectively against four men, Sanders said, but not against the hot-shooting Goldson.

Needleman had 23 points for the Crimson on long-range and accurate jump shooting. Silver scored 21 and pulled down 13 rebounds. Tony Jenkins followed with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Bill Perry and Mike Griffin finished with eight points apiece. Both were key men for the Crimson.

Griffin ran Harvard's attack until he fouled out with 2:18 remaining in the overtime.
