Freshmen, Houses Vote Not to Open Union on Weekends

Over 2400 Harvard undergraduates voted last week not to re-open the Union on weekends.

The results of the poll taken during reading period by the Committee on Housing and Undergraduate Life indicate that 2467 students oppose any change in the present policy of assigning freshmen to House dining halls on weekends.

Only 610 students said that they would pay the additional cost of opening the Union for the entire week.

Freshmen Opposed

Freshmen polled in the Union voted 447 to 97 to continue to close the Union on Saturday and Sunday, while all 13 Houses also supported the present policy.

CHUL has received complaints this year from several House Committees that the inflow of freshmen on weekends resulted in overcrowding.

Burriss Young '57, assistant dean of Freshmen and supervisor of the poll, said last week that because of the results of the poll, CHUL will probably not consider reopening the Union, despite the House Committee complaints.
