Radcliffe Sailors Take Shrew Sloop Trophy

The Radcliffe sailing team won its own spring invitational regatta last weekend for the sixth consecutive year. Skippers Kathy Angell and Mary Roehm sailed to division titles as they built up a 15 point advantage over runner-up MIT to win the Shrew Sloop Trophy. Tufts, B.U. and Simmons followed MIT.

Angell took firsts in four of her ten races to take A division honors, while Roehm had seven firsts, two seconds and a fourth on the Charles. Both skippers started out poorly, allowing MIT to gain an early lead that the Engineers held through the tenth race.

With the regular season over, the team is now practicing for the upcoming Women's National Championships in Newport Harbor, California, June 5-8.

In other sailing action, Tom Reps led the Harvard sailing team to victory in the MIT Invitational regatta to cap the season. Reps took his division with four firsts, three seconds and a fourth. Chris Hormg aided Reps with a fourth place finish in his division as Harvard edged out the University of Rhode Island by two points.

Finally, Harvard's top skippers Terry Neff and Chris Middendorf finished the season with disappointing performances in the New England Single-Handed Championships at Cottage Park Yacht Club in Winthrop.
