John P. Reardon Appointed to Head Sports Fund Drive

By Beth Stephens

John P. Reardon '60, director of admissions for Harvard College, became coordinator of the Athletic Fund Drive July 1.

Reardon will work half-time for both the athletic fund and the admissions office while resigning as senior tutor of Kirkland House.

Renovation and Construction

The $24-38 million drive will solicit funds from Harvard alumni for the renovation of existing athletic facilities and for new construction, including an athletic complex on Observatory Hill to serve the Quadrangle Houses.

Reardon said yesterday that his new involvement in soliciting funds from alumni could create conflicts with his position as director of admissions. Alumni sometimes expect their donations to improve their children's chances of admission, he said.

'Potential for Problems'

"It's something I was concerned about before taking the job. There's no question the potential for problems is there," he said.

Reardon said his solution will be to take himself "completely out of any case involving potential conflict."
