Skiers Tenth at UVm Winter Carnival

By David J. States

Harvard skiers opened the college season with a disappointing tenth place finish in the University of Vermont Winter Carnival and with captain Scott Johnson sidelined for the season with a broken leg, a comeback will be difficult.

While the Harvard squad struggled. UVm swept to victory in the first winter carnival held in Burlington. The Vermont Cats have been trying to establish themselves as the skiing power of the East and this victory marks a key step in their rise.

The Harvard team was hurt by falls and races not representative of its skiers' abilities. Dick Raines started the weekend race with a strong first run in the slalom, but felt in the second run, negating his first run efforts. Sophomore Eric Jewett led the squad with a forth place finish in that race, and junior Gordon Adler added of 22nd place finish.

Week of Training

The skiers had just finished a week of training on the steep slopes, of Cannon Mountain, and were surprised by the shallow pitch of the slope chosen for the giant slalom. While they had been skiing well in Hampshire, the hard edging techniques that they acquired were not the fastest way down the flat OS course. Raines, Adler and sophomore Peter Anton finished a disappointing 29th, 31st, and 38th respectively. Peter Andersen of Dartmouth sporting a skin tight silvery blue downhill suit won the race with a technically superb run.

In the cross country race won by Chris Nice of Dartmouth junior Peter Dillon edged out captain Paul Finnegan for 29th place in the strong field.

Harvard's jumpers turned in a solid performance for the squad, with senior Scott Johnson sailing 34 meters. The best jump of the day was a record 42 meters for UVm jumper Peter Kongali, Fourth place for UVm was former U.S. Olympics Joe Lamb. Lamb was unable to make the UVm jumping team last year because the shoot had so many high-flying Nor-wegians.

The weekend race was the first major meet hosted by UVm in the Burlington area. The school held a carnival two years ago, but was forced to cancel last year because of lack of snow.

Captain of the Alpine team Scott Johnson broke his leg training at Temple Mt. Sunday.
