Boston University Downs Vermont, 7-3

Marzo Scores Twice

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

BOSTON--Boston University spotted upstart Vermont two early goals Friday night and rolled back behind a pair of scores by Peter Marzo for a 7-3 victory over the Catamounts in the opening round of the 14th annual ECAC hockey tournament.

Boston University dominated Vermont, in the early going, but it was the Catamounts, last year's ECAC Division II champs, who scored first on goals by Chris Hurley and Andy Halford.

The Terriers tied it up before the period ended as Jim Glover and Buddy Powers scored 30 seconds apart.

B.U.'s Ken Kuzyk and Vermont's Michel Leveau matched goals midway through the second period and Marzo got what proved to be the winning marker on a rebound with 27 seconds left in the period.

Mike Eruzione, Rich Meagher and Marzo sealed the B.U. victory with scores in the third period as the Terriers outshot the Catamounts by a 38-17 margin for the game.

Rock Steady

No matter how hard you rooted for Brown in the quarterfinals or Vermont in the semis, deep in your heart you've been hoping for another Harvard-B.U. rematch. Thanks to last evening's Catamount fade and a heartbreaking loss for Cornell last night, we'll get what we've been waiting for tonight at 9 in the Garden.

The odds makers may give the Terrlers an edge due to the late-night battle that Harvard had to go through to get to the finals. But this is Harvard's year (if they don't win it now it may be a while before they can do it again) and they will not need the ready-made alibi. Harvard 4, Boston University 2, in a reversal of last year.
