H. Stuart Hughes, Gurney Professor of History and Political Science, resigned from the Harvard faculty in February, citing the History Department's 1973 refusal to tenure his wife Judith, an assistant professor of Social Studies, as the reason for his departure.
Hughes, who will be going with his wife to tenured positions at the University of California at San Diego, complained at that time of a "consistent effort" by "certain key professors"--particularly in the modern European wing of the department--to block her appointment.
