B.U., Cornell, Brown Take Thrillers; Crimson Icers Face Terriers Friday

In one of the most exciting nights of college hockey in recent memory, the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) hockey tournament began last night. As a result of two upsets and two near-upsets, Harvard drew Boston University as a semifinal opponent on Friday night and Brown is scheduled to face-off against Ivy rival Cornell.

Last night's contest all went down to the final buzzer, as B.U. squeaked by Boston College 6-5, Brown slipped past Dartmouth 5-4 in overtime, and Cornell held on to defeat Clarkson 9-7.

At B.U.'s Walter Brown arena the end was very sudden. B.U. captain Terry Meagher put his team out in front 6-5 and was being mobbed by his teammates as the crowd chanted "Go B.U."

There were still 53 seconds remaining in the game but one just knew that a stunned Boston College squad could not mount one more comeback as both teams had been doing all night.

With 2:25 remaining in the game B.U.'s Mike Fidler had triggered the red light on a power-play goal from the right face-off circle.

At the one-minute mark, Bob Dudley seized an errant pass and coasted in on B.C. goalie Paul Skidmore. He somehow blocked Dudley's shot but Mike Eruzione swallowed up the rebound and fed Terry Meagher in the crease for the victory.

At Providence, Brown and Dartmouth did their best to out-do the B.U.B.C. game in excitement. Skip Stovern netted the game-winner at 8:14 of the extra session.

Dartmouth forced the game into overtime with just 23 seconds remaining in regulation time, With their goalie on the bench in favor of an extra skater, Joe Tomlak did the honors for the Big Green.

Even at Potsdam N.Y. things were not quiet as Cornell eeked out an upset victory over Clarkson. What seemed like an 8-1 massacre turned into a 9-7 thriller late in the third period.
