Many dining hall workers have refused to wear new uniforms purchased for them by the administration, complaining that they are of poor quality and that they are embossed with the workers' first names.
Alan Balsam, head shop steward for the dining hall workers, said yesterday that the union will ask the University for $25 per worker to buy their own uniforms.
"We think the workers should decide what variety of uniform they want," he said.
Frank J. Weissbecker, director of Food Services, said yesterday he has had no complaints about the new uniforms.
Sylvia Gallagher, a shop steward for the College dining halls, said "gunny-sack" uniforms and hair nets are collecting dust in closets because workers prefer to purchase their own, better-quality apparel.
Some workers also felt that having their first names embossed on their uniforms was "childish," Adams House shop steward Mary King said yesterday
