President Bok approved this week a University-wide tuition assistance plan (TAP) that will subsidize some University employees for all courses taken at Harvard and for certain courses taken elsewhere.

Clarence Cooper, manager of career and organizational development in the Personal Office, said yesterday that Harvard will levy a 0.4 per cent "tax" on payrolls to finance the program.

The program will reduce course costs by 90 per cent for regular term courses, and to a flat $25 for Summer School and Extension courses. It will also reimburse employees for 50 per cent of their tuition costs at other institutions.

To qualify, employees must have worked at Harvard for six months, and must work at least 17 1/2 hours per week.

Cooper estimated that between five and 15 per cent of Harvard's employees will take advantage of the program.

Cooper said yesterday that the cost of the program to the University would approximately be $200,000 for courses taken within Harvard and $40,000 for courses taken outside of the University.
