The Harvard Classics will go up against a host of Boston area basketball stars today in a round-robin tournament being held to raise money for a local summer basketball camp.
Bob Bigelow of the Kansas City Kings and Jim O'Brien, a former standout at Boston College and in the ABA, are among the big names on the rosters of the three squads who will compete with the Classics for first honors in the tournament.
The meet will begin in the IAB.
Also on hand will be former Boston schoolboy sensations King Gaskins and Bill Raynor, as well as Bill Carey, Tony Jenkins and Kevin McLaughlin of the Harvard varsity.
Scratch a Schoolboy
The Classics are a last-minute stand-in for the squad of local high school all-stars that was slated to enter the tournament. The schoolboys were scratched from the card after University officials told the tournament organizers that NCAA regulations do not allow colleges to sponsor such events if they involve high school players.
Kevin Kallaugher of the Classics was cautious about his team's chances this afternoon. "I don't know how we'll be able to stand up against some of those old All-Americans," he said yesterday.
Kevin McCluskey, the Harvard senior who helped to organize the contests, said yesterday that some of the proceeds from the $2 donations for admission will go to a scholarship fund for the Talisman Summer Basketball Camp in Milton, Mass., and the rest will be used to help fund club sports at Harvard.
