Bowdoin Tops Laxwomen In Maine Rain and Mud

By Marc M. Sadowsky

The Radcliffe lacrosse team took it on the chin again yesterday. This time it was at the hands of Bowdoin, which handed the laxwomen a 5-3 loss in a game played in Brunswick, Maine.

The 'Cliffe, weakened by the loss of a few starters, including scoring star Carrie Minot, could not muster much of an offense. In the first half they scored two goals, while in the second they could muster only one.

The game was played on a soggy field and under an overcast sky which periodically spilled rain on the players. The temperature was about 45 degrees.

"I think the offense played pretty well together," attacker Margie Williams said yesterday.

Getting Tired

"But you could see we were getting tired at the end of the game," she added.

Bowdoin made good use of a loose man-to-man defense, which sometimes tightened up to double-team the Radcliffe attack, effectively stifling the 'Cliffe's scoring drives.

Woman-to-Woman

Defensively, the laxwomen played woman-to-woman the entire game. But defender Kyle Patterson yesterday attributed Bowdoin's ability to score to sparkling shooting.

"Bowdoin dropped some nice shots," Patterson said. "It can't really be blamed on the defense. They were really pretty shots."

Patterson said one of the Bowdoin attackers made an incredible shot, scoring from a position parallel to the goal line.

The loss drops the laxwomen's regular season record to 0-5. Even though the laxwomen would probably rather forget this season, they still have tough games ahead of them.

Saturday, they take to the turnpike and travel to New Jersey to take on potent Princeton. Tuesday, they'll trek down Storrow Drive to take on Boston University and next Saturday they'll be up in Hanover to face Dartmouth and Williams.
