Sox Dump Yanks; Brawl Breaks Out

Firsts went flying at Yankee Stadium last night as the Red Sox and the Yankees broke into a bench-clearing brawl in the seventh inning of a game the Sox raced on to win, 8-2.

The brouhaha erupted when Yankee Lou Piniella, after being thrown out at home by an incredible throw by Sox outfielder Dwight Evans, bowled down Sox catcher Carlton Fisk in the hopes of jarring the ball from Fisk's hand. Fisk thanked him with a solid right, and both teams converged on home plate to have it out.

Good news and bad news otherwise marked the Beantowners' win. The good: Carl Yastrzemski lifted two homers into the seats, giving him five in two nights. The bad: Bill "Spaceman" Lee suffered a shoulder injury during the fisticuffs and will be out "indefinitely," according to team physician Dr. Edward Crane last night.
