Charles P. Whitlock, who will become associate dean of the Faculty in July, will replace Jean Mayer, professor of Nutrition, as master of Dudley House next year.
Mayer is leaving Harvard to become the president of Tufts University.
Whitlock, now dean of the College, said yesterday his appointment as Dudley House master will allow him to maintain ties with students despite his new administrative position, in which he will work primarily with University staff.
Whitlock was Dudley House's first senior tutor, from 1952 until 1958, and was instrumental in incorporating the nonresident student center into the regular House system.
Mayer yesterday called Whitlock one of Dudley House's "founding fathers," adding that he is reassured that he is leaving the House in good hands.
John R. Marquand, senior tutor of Dudley House, who has worked with Whitlock for the last six years in his position as assistant dean of the College, said yesterday "the House is fortunate to have someone like Dean Whitlock to follow in Jean Mayer's footsteps."
Marquand added that he believes Whitlock's wife, Patricia H. Whitlock, will also be a great addition to the House as its associate master.
Whitlock said he has not had time to consider what changes he would like to see in the House, but that he hopes to carry on the traditions of Mayer, whom, Whitlock said, has done "a terrific job" in his three years as the House's master.
Back to School
Whitlock said he hopes to teach a house seminar in his field, Social Relations. He has been unable to teach since he became dean of the College four years ago and "got involved with paperwork."
Dudley House has about 400 regular undergraduate members, making the commuter House the third largest on campus.
Student representatives from the House discussed possible candidates for the position with Mayer and Marquand, and were all enthusiastic about the final decision, Mayer said.
The Corporation gave final approval to Whitlock's appointment yesterday, Whitlock and his family will move into the Dudley House master's residence on Dunster St. sometime this summer.
