Brown Shuts Out Women's Soccer, 2-0

The Harvard women's soccer team was shut out yesterday by Brown, 2-0, in a frustrating game in Providence.

The Bruin offense scored the first goal on a direct kick within five minutes of the start of play. Goal two came shortly after the first one, and, "After that, they didn't even penetrate," Harvard manager Maura Costin said after the game.

Harvard player Gia Johnson said yesterday there was some dispute centering around Brown's first goal. It came off a penalty shot for a hand ball, and some Harvard booters felt a similar call should have been made against Brown later in the game.

Awesome Brown

During the first period, the Crimson offense did a good job of keeping up with the Brown running game--which was awesome. But luck just wasn't going Harvard's way, as no one could get a shot off. Kathy Batter, Harvard center half-back, said after the game, "By the end of the first half we were sort of slowing down a bit."

Irene Kacandes was the Harvard goalie for over half the game. Part way into the second half, Pam Berry took over as the Harvard defense shone, holding Brown scoreless.

Both Gia Johnson and Kathy Batter, halfbacks did a good job on defense in the second half. Sophomore Rian Smith also put in a great effort, keeping her Bruin opponents from getting by with the ball.

After the game, several Harvard boosters said they were happy about the team effort against what Nancy Levin, halfback, termed, "the best team around." Levin also called the game "very physical and fast."

Freshman standout Sue St. Louis spoke of her opponents with respect too. "Brown is one of the top teams in the country and certainly in this area." She added, 'They were very good with their feet."

Batter praised Brown's very good booting abilities," but added her team was intent on winning this year because last year Brown blanked the Crimson twice and "said something like 'don't worry, you'll be able to score next year."'

The Harvard record now stands at 2-2, after victories over BC and Smith. The team is looking forward to another team effort--this time again against Vermont--on Friday at 3 p.m.

One team member said confidently, "No doubt we're gonna crush Vermont, the team's just ready for a win."
