South House Shuts Down Quincy, 6-0, For First Tackle Football Win Ever

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

South House made the history books yesterday at Soldiers Field by toppling Quincy, 6-0, to register the Quad's first win ever in intramural tackle football.

Player-coach Bob Tedaldi's quarterback sneak from the two-yard line capped a 90-yd., third-quarter drive for the game's only score.

The win was not totally unexpected, coming after South House had knotted a powerful Winthrop squad, 8-8, last week. "We're going to surprise a lot of people this year," South House's Angel Leon said after the game. This is the first year that South has fielded a team.

Winthrop kept pace with the men from the Quad in the battle for the AFC division lead by romping to a lopsided 20-6 win over Mather House.

Shake and Bake

Winthrop quarterback John Hendricks and wide receiver Steve Barrand gave the Mather secondary fits, clicking for six receptions, including the game's first score with only four minutes gone in the first quarter. Jude Kearney's sweep made it 13-0 before southpaw Hendricks hit Rob Inches with a 63-yd. strike to turn the game into a rout. Mather's Steve O'Hara averted the shutout with a 50-yd. off-tackle burst midway through the final stanza.

Ecstatic

Winthrop defensive captain John Langer was ecstatic with his team's play, crediting the squad's linemen with allowing Hendricks time to deliver his bullets and with shutting down the vaunted Mather attack.
