B.U. Smashes Providence, 5-3

The Terriers of Boston University battered Providence College, 5-3, last night, in the special ECAC hockey playoff game to gain the slippery second spot for the upcoming NCAA tournament.

Boston College has already earned the other NCAA berth for the East by virtue of its win in the finals of last weekend's ECAC tournament.

Dick Lamby scored two goals and assisted on another, but the Friars snuck up from behind with goals from Jeff Whistler and John Sullivan late in the second period.

With the score 4-3 after two periods, B.U.'s John Bethel and goalie Jim Craig proved the Terriers' bite was as bad as their bark, as they helped their team slide to a decisive victory, Bethel garnering a last-second tally to seal the win.

In this weekend's NCAA basketball, Notre Dame bounded past DePaul yesterday to capture the Midwest regional championship, 84-64. Following a close first half, the Irish really started fighting. A 20-footer by freshmen Kelly Tripucka gave Notre Dame the lead for good at 47-46 with 11:48 remaining.

Duke dribbled its way to first place in the East regionals yesterday with a hustling defense and an offense so fast that it left Villanova drooling on the side, 90-72.

Kentucky barely slipped past Michigan State Saturday to grab the Mideast regionals, 52-49. The West regionals were just as close, but Arkansas managed to top California State (Fullerton), 61-58, Saturday.
