Classics Pass Century Mark; Hoopsters Notch 100th Victory

This winter The Harvard Classics notched their 100th team victory and compiled their third 20-win season in five years, as they racked up a 21-4 record. Only post-season tournaments and a week-long trip to an undetermined locale remain on the 1977-78 schedule.

The Classics traveled to Puerto Rico and Portugal during spring recess the last two years. Although John Harvey, organizer and coach of The Classics, has been unable to work out a trip next week, appears The Classics will need their passports in June.

At present, two destinations are possible. Either the Central African Republic or Greenland could play host to Harvard's "Vagabond Basketeers" following commencement.

The Classics rolled to their impressive record despite facing tougher competition this year than in the past season. Senior guard Mike Cantor said yesterday, "Games were close, but I enjoyed it more than playing against better teams."

This month's 74-69 victory over UMass Boston was win number 100 for the Basketeers. With a career total of 102-25. John Harvey now stands out as the winningest coach in the history of the Gen Ed Department.

Against Bentley College's varsity "B" team The Classics hit over 60 per cent of their shots and avenged an earlier loss by the Crimson varsity to Bentley's first-stringers. Bob Bengel landed 12 of 13 outside shots to pace the hoopsters to a 106-75 victory.

Frosh Ran Away

The Classics defeated the Harvard freshmen for the first time in their history to provide another of this year's highlights. Gordon Johnson and Fritz Mayer led the Classics to the 86-55 runaway victory at the IAB last month.

In a home-and-away series with the Lowell University "B" team. The Classics edged their way to a set of narrow victories, 93-91, and 83-82.

Salem State College handed the Basketeers one of its four losses this year, in a game where one of The Classics sprained his ankle and four more fouled out. The three remaining hoopsters could not handle Salem State's full-court press and succumbed 63-62.
