Crimson Finishes 7th In IC4A Track Meet

Despite some strong individual performances, the Harvard track team wound up this weekend's IC4A track meet at Princeton yesterday in an unspectacular seventh place. The Crimson tallied a mere eight points as Villanova wound up with 64, to take the overall championship.

Geoff Stiles, entering the meet as one of the East's top collegiate pole vaulters, led a trio of Harvard finishers with a vault of 16 ft. 4 in., to put Harvard ahead of New England rivals Northeastern, Rhode Island and Southern Connecticut.

Thad McNulty placed fifth for the Crimson with a 4:10.4 finish in the mile, and Ed Ajootian pulled through on Saturday with another fifth-place showing with a 60-ft., 5 1/4-in. heave in the 35-pound weight throw.

Ed Kania of Dartmouth won the event with a throw of 64 ft., 2 in. Harvard's John Chafee made it to the finals of the 880-yd. run, but did not place, as Villanova emerged tops in that event.

After Saturday's events, the smart money expected a battle between Villanova, which went into yesterday's competition with four points, and Maryland, which led the field with an impressive eight.

The Terps, however, could not follow through, ending up with 39 to place second to Villanova.

Coming out of last week's Heptagonal Games in sixth place the Crimson trackmen were considerably weakened by injuries to key runners, including one to team captain Paul Organ. Organ could not participate in either meet.
