Boston University and Tufts University Monday announced increases in tuition and room-and-board fees for the 1978-79 academic years, with officials at both schools citing inflation as the principal cause of the increase.

Tuition at Tufts will increase from $4150 to $4500, and room and board fees will rise from $2130 to $2475.

John F. Mitchell, Tufts vice president for business affairs, said yesterday that the fee increases are necessary to ensure a high-quality education program and keep faculty salaries competitive with those at other universities.

Tuition at B.U. will increase from $3830 to $4230, with room and board fees increasing $165, from $2310 to $2475.

Tufts and B.U. will hike to meet the increase in tuition, room and board costs, officials at both schools said yesterday.
