St. Louis Gets Hat Trick As Women Booters Roll; Terriers Bow Wow, 7-2

By Nell Scovell

Saturday was a typical fall day: the leaves dropped, the temperature went down and the Boston University women's soccer team bowed to Harvard, 7-2, at the Business School field.

While the Terriers found themselves in an autumn of their discontent, the Crimson booters--now halfway into the regular season--extended their undefeated streak to six games.

Harvard clearly outran and outskilled the hapless Terriers, even though three Crimson starters watched the game from the bench and the players on the field had to adjust to the wider and smoother surface of the Business School field.

The dog-slaying began at 14:37 in the first half, when Harvard's freshman standout, Kelly Gately, drove a Vera Fajtova pass between the B.U. goalie and the right goalpost for a score.

Super senior Sue St. Louis tallied next when she took a tip from Cat Ferrante down the field past a lone Terrier fullback before left-footing it into the net at 28:17.

Only 11 seconds later, St. Louis provided a mirror image of her previous goal, and before you could look twice she had notched her second goal of the contest.

The secret of Harvard's strength may have been revealed at the beginning of the second half when the B.U. team came out strong after having borrowed two water bottles from Crimson manager Maura Costin during halftime. While the content of the bottles remains in question, the Terriers undoubtedly were recharged. Donna Drews dug the ball out of a tangle in front of the net and sailed it over Crimson goalie Barb Mahon's outstretched arms at 3:00.

Harvard, however, regained control of the game quickly. At 11:58 tri-captain Julie Brynteson chipped a perfect curving airball to St. Louis, who slammed it into the right-hand side of the net, leaving Terrier goalie Margie McClure tasting the turf.

Sophomore Ellen "Sprout" Jakovic tallied her first goal of the season when Marcia Hamelin redirected a direct kick to Jakovic, who proceeded to drive it home at 25:25.

Charge!

Less than five minutes later, Jakovic upped her goal total 100 per cent when she charged a goalie with a cross from Tricia Welch. Though the B.U. goalie managed to block the attack, she failed to hang onto the ball, which rebounded off Jakovic's chest in the follow-up play for a goal at 31:00.

B.U. scored again on a mix-up play in front of the net at 33:02. But Harvard had the last laugh when junior Cecille Scoon scooted the ball down the left hand side from the midfield and settled the score at 7-2 with two minutes left to play.
