The Southern Africa Solidarity Committee (SASC) is sponsoring a material aid drive to send canned foods, clothing, medical supplies, books and other relief supplies to refugees fleeing from Rhodesia, John W. Metzel '81, director of the drive, said Tuesday.

The drive, which will end April 23, gives "students and faculty a chance to do something concrete about the situation in Southern Africa," Metzel said.

The goal of the drive is to collect two articles of clothing from every student, he said. "We've already collected 400 pounds of suppies, he added.

SASC decided to sponsor the drive when the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) requested supplies in an article in the South Africa News, Metzel said.

ZANU said in the article, "Since we have liberated most of the Zimbabwe countryside, it is now our duty and responsibility to provide the peasants in the areas with the necessities of life."

ZANU is an organization of revolutionary fighters who are opposed to the coalition government of Rhodesia. ZANU also manages relief centers for refugees feeling from Rhodesia.
