Unseeded Harvard sophomore Don Pompan will face one of the top college players in the country, University of Texas star Steve Denton, in the first round of the NCAA tennis tournament at Athens, Ga. today.
Denton's hard serve is perhaps the best in the country, so Pompan should have his hands full. The courts at the University of Georgia have been resur-faced since last year, however, which should favor Pompan's quick, all-around game.
"I could upset Denton," Pompan said last night, "because he's been known to be erratic."
Pompan won the New England singles championship this spring in the midst of reeling off a 13-match winning streak. But against his only national-caliber opponent--Jay Lapidus of Princeton--Pompan lost in straight sets.
UCLA edged Trinity (Texas) for the NCAA team title at Athens yesterday, taking four out of six singles matches and one of three in the doubles to clinch it.
