Police Charge 11 Protesters In High School Rally Incident

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Cambridge police arrested 11 Marxist organizers on the campus of the city's high school yesterday and charged them with trespassing, inciting to riot and a variety of other charges.

The organizers identified themselves as part of the May Day committee, which held a rally outside the school yesterday.

Surrounded by a group of high school students who sang loud choruses of "God Bless America," members of the group delivered a series of speeches and passed out literature urging students to join other May Day protests.

High school security guards called city police "when it looked as if things might turn ugly," the director of security at the school said yesterday. "We didn't want it to get out of hand; things only looked like they could get worse," the guard said.

Police loaded the demonstrators into police cars and took them to the Central Square station for booking.

Later in the day, other members of the same group returned to the high school to continue their demonstration as students left the school.

The group dispersed before police arrived, the guard said.
