Bell Becomes Ford Professor; Jorgenson Given Abbe Chair

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Daniel Bell, formerly professor of Sociology, and Dale W. Jorgenson, formerly professor of Economics, recently assumed endowed chairs in their respective fields.

Bell, one of the world's leading social critics who is identified with the neoconservative movement, yesterday was named Ford Professor of Social Sciences.

He replaces David Riesman '31, who said Bell "has one of the most erudite and wide-ranging intellects on a world scale."

Range

"In the range of his interests in space he deprovincializes us; in time, also; he has a deep knowledge of history--well beyond the borders of Western tradition," Riesman said, adding, "He has a kind of boyish enthusiasm for exploring new areas, especially the future."

Jorgenson, an expert in energy economics who is conducting a study comparing the U.S. and Japanese economies, became Abbe Professor of Economics July 1.

Master

A member of the Faculty since 1969, Jorgenson is a past recipient of the John Bates Clark Medal of the American Economics Association, which cited him as "master of the territory between economics and statistics."

Bell, also a Faculty member since 1969, is widely known and respected for his theories on capitalism, general education and the future of post-industrial societies.

A journalist and a scholar, Bell was a founding member of the journal The Public Interest, and has authored such works as "The End of Ideology," "The Coming of Post-Industrial Society" and "The Cultural Contradictions of Capitalism."

Most recently, President Carter named Bell a member of the Commission for a National Agenda for the Eighties. He has served on a variety of government panels and was vice president of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
