Burst Pipe

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

A pipe that burst during the January 3-4 weekend damaged offices on three levels of the English Department offices at 34 Kirkland Street.

Buildings and Grounds sources reported that the leaking water warped walls and buckled floorboards in the two-story building, which was rennovated two years ago.

Costs for the repair of the damage will not be known until the end of the week, David Jones, Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds for the North Yard area, said yesterday.

The pipe, frozen when a second floor window blew open, caused both "mechanical and structural" damage, Jones said. He was unable to provide details of the extent of the incident's effects on the building.

The water caused no damage to personal property of the professors whose offices are located in the building, Mary C. Johnson, undergraduate secretary of the English department, said yesterday.

Although several offices were affected, the incident caused little inconvenience to the department because it occured during the winter break, Judith F. Rogers, assistant to the department chairman said yesterday. "Luckily, no one was around," Johnson said.

Repair of the building will begin next week, after the damage has completely dried.
