BSA Elects Williams Leader; Democratic Club Picks Velona

The Black Students Association (BSA) and the Harvard Democratic Club this week held elections for next year's officers.

The BSA elected Gaye Williams '83 president Wednesday, and the Democratic Club chose Jews A. Velona '83 president yesterday.

Williams said last night she hopes to "work very closely with membership, cultivate a strong Black community here on campus, and strengthen our connections with the greater Boston area."

BSA also elected Eve M. Troutt '83 program director of the Afro-American Cultural Center. Mark Venson '83 and Vada Hill '82 tied for director of the center. A run-off election will be held next week.

Velona defeated Bradford C. Mank '83 by what was described as "a very small number of votes."

In his pre-election speech, Velona said his first goal as president will be to raise money for the club.

Velona said that he will also stress political education and student political involvement.

The club also elected Christina A. Spaulding '84 vice-president. Spaulding defeated Richard W. Painter '84.
