Participating in its Last Warm-up Match before the New England Championships, the Harvard Women's Tennis team defeated William and Mary, 6-3, Saturday.
Harvard Coach Don Usher said that he believed the Crimson's "good spirit with every, one pulling her own load" boosted the team to victory. Usher added that Saturday's victory coupled with Friday's win over the University of Virginia would "keep the momentum going" for future contests.
In one of two key singles matches. Harvard's top-seeded Elizabeth Evans snagged a second-set tie-breaker to defeat the Indians' Cherie Dow, 6-2, 7-6, in straight sets. And, in another second-set squeaker. Harvard freshman Roberts Hing held off a strong rally to down Chrissie Wells, 6-4, 7-6.
The Harvard captain, sophomore Debbi Kaufman, and Maria Pealso played excoptionally well. Pe Demotished Marion Gengler, 6-0, 6-1, and Kautman breezed by Karen Dudley, 6-4, 6-3.
