Splash. The Harvard women's swimming team returned to Blodgett last evening for its first-home meet of the year and drowned Boston College, 96-53. The victory events the aquawomen's season record, 1-1
Senior Co-Captain Shelby Calvett paced the Crimson attack by snagging first places in both 200-meter freestyle and the 200-meter backstroke. Harvard's other double winner was junior Debbi Zimic, who captured the 1000-meter freestyle and the 200-meter IM events.
Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of the meet for the Crimson was its ability to sweep the sprint events, something which Harvard is usually unable to accomplish. Junior Tracy Black and sophomore Diane Smith notched victories in the 50-meter freestyle and the 50-meter butterfly, respectively. In addition, Harvard swimmers placed second and third in both events.
Harvard's diving turned out to be as strong as ever as it swept its events, too. Sophomore standout Jennifer Goldberg took the three-meter event and freshman Shanon Byrd walked away with the one meter event.
"We did very well," Harvard Coach Vicki Hays said after the meet. "We started off slowly but the overall picture is that we are where we should be for this time of year....Our performance indicates that they're definitely in shape for the big lvy League matches down the road."
The University of Maine comes into town this Saturday for a confrontation at 1 p.m. at Blodgett.
