Veteran infielder Brad Bauer hammered home two runs and drove in six tallies while Jeff Musselman and Billy Larson buried complete game victories for Harvard, allowing the baseball team to split four games at Soldiers Field Friday and Saturday, winning one each from Army and Cornell.
In Saturday's action, three unearned runs courtesy of four Harvard errors helped the Big Red sink the Crimson nine in the first game, 6-3, despite fine pitching from Billy Doyle Harvard earned a split for the day by taking the nightcap, 10-4, behind the pitching of junior Larson who went the distance to be come Harvard's first four game winner.
Harvard's offense failed to get in gear until the sixth inning in the first game allowing the Big Red to accumulate a six-run lead off starter Doyle, who dropped to 3-3 for the year. Freshman third baseman Elliot Rivera didn't help Harvard's cause committing two costly errors, including a miscue on the opening play of the game.
The Crimson finally got to Cornell ace Greg Myers (now 3-1 lifetime vs Harvard and heading for his fourth year in a row as All-League) in the sixth when Bauer blasted a solo shot over the left field wall RBI swings by shortstop Tony "Coots" DiCesare and centerfielder Bruce Weller added two more Harvard runs in the seventh.
The home team's attack came alive in time to salvage the second game for the Crimson Saturday collecting 10 runs on 12 hits five of them for extra bases, leading the way was Bauer, who put together a three for four three-RBI day which included a long home run over the enter field wall in the sixth.
With the score knotted at three after four innings. Harvard broke the game open in the fifth by tagging Cornell starter Jay Kobylarz for four runs on five hits Donnie Allard and Paul Chicarello contributed RBI singles, and first-baseman Eddie Farrell had the big blast a two-run triple over the center fielder's head that rolled to the wall
Meanwhile, Crimson starter Larson kept the heavy-hitting Cornell bats in check, surrendering only one run in the last five frames and picking up five strikeout for the day
Nuclear Freeze
The Crimson nine had begun its weekend with two pitching duels Friday against Army, losing the first, 3-2, to the Cadets' Eric Sine and winning the second, 1 0, on the strength of freshman Musselman's awesome performance
In the opener, base running and defense went from bad to worse for Harvard allowing Army to take a heartbreaker in the seventh inning on an unearned run Senior Mike Smerczynski, who took the loss did himself in by booting and then throwing away back-to-back bunts in the tell-tale inning, giving the Cadets the winning run
Harvard bats remained dormant following a two-run second, a credit to Army's Sinc, who got into a groove in the later innings. Not that the Crimson didn't have its chances. Left fielder Chris Schindler alone stranded five baserunners in the third and fifth innings and Harvard also failed to capitalize on Rivera's double to open the sixth.
All of which slighted a strong performance by the Crimson pitching corps which gave up only four hits on the day. Freshman Charlie Marchese turned in a solid game, allowing only two runs on three hits in five plus innings Fittingly, the first game ended with Harvard catcher Vinnie Martelli being thrown out stealing.
Musselman pitched far and away the best game of the weekend treating Crimson fans to an impressive two hit shutout of Army in the nightcap Friday Deadlocked, 0.0, through four innings. Bauer got the game winner in the fifth with a line drive double over third base to score Weller from second The second baseman got the only other extra-base hitin the game as well, a double in the second inning
In a game that saw only seven hits for both sides. Musselman fanned six different Cadets and then retired the last seven straight.
THE NOTEBOOK: Harvard still struggling to reach the .500 mark. The squad is currently agame under at 14-15 overall and 7-9 inthe Eastern League. Cornell, on the other hand, is in second place inthe leagure and is now 11-5, 21-13 overall. With theBig Red's loss to Harvard, Navy clinched the EIBL title. The Crimson's other weekend opponent. Army, dropped two to Dartmouth Saturday to fall to 19-19, 8-10 in theleagure. The weatherwas idyllie for all four games last weekend, which helped to boost attendance was a red hot team coming into Cambridge, having swept arch-rival Navy in a double header eight days ago. The future bodes well for Harvard pitching. Both Crimson hurlers on Friday--right Marchese and southpaw Musselman--are freshman, and together they allowed Army only two in more than 12 innings. In contrast, Cornell's pitchers Saturday--the squad's best--are both seniors. Harvard's yearly nemesis Myers and southpaw Kobylarz are both departing for greener pastures next year. Nerther Myers nor Larson had their best stuff in collecting wins on Saturday.
