Second Harvard Organization Wants Mondale for President

By John Rosenthal

A group of law students yesterday formed the second Harvard organization backing the Presidential candidacy of former Vice President Walter F. Mondale.

Organizers of "Mondale for President" plan to continue fundraising already begun in Boston, and to start publicity drives this week, third year law student Richmond Jerome, a founder of the group, said yesterday.

A Mondale campaign staff member, Bennett Freeman, said he hoped to encourage many people from the organization to participate in an upcoming program called "America for Mondale." The program centers around a 30-minute television sport which Mondale has purchased on all three networks.

Bennett added that he hoped the campaign staff would get 5000 people to sponsor fund-raising parties during the half-hour speech.

Four other groups an campus have come out in support of Democratic Presidential candidates, David V. Thottungal '84, president of the Harvard Democratic Club, said yesterday.

He cited organizations supporting Sen. John Glenn (D-Ohio), Sen, Gary Hart (D-Colo.), Sen. Alan Cranston (D-Calif.), and former South Dakota Sen. George McGovern.

The Harvard-Radcliffe Committee for Walter Mondale, founder Richard W. Painter '84 said, is planning a speaker series in support of Mondale. Tentative speakers include Professor of Government Joseph S. Nye Jr., and former 1980 Independent Vice Presidential candidate Patrick Lucey.

Painter, whose organization formed last May, added that he did not know how the two groups would work together.
