Harvard Will Name Loehs As Permanent Dudley Masters

Harvard has decided to appoint Arthur L. Locb, Senior Lecturer on Visual and Environmental Studies, and his wife Lotje as the permanent masters of Dudley House.

The naming of the Loebs--pending routine Corporation approval--appears to put to rest an ongoing controversy about the status of the House, which services non-resident students.

College officials have recently debuted options for closing down Dudley House and finding other ways of helping non-residents--options that now appear to be fore-closed.

Loeb said yesterday that he had accepted the position under the expectation that the House would continue in its current state. "It is our understanding that we have the full backing for the House from the administration," said Loeb, who has been acting comaster since Charles P. Whitlock retired in 1982.

"We feel very close to the House, and we are glad to be on board," be added.

Officials and students affiliated with the House praised the appointment, saying that the Loebs have shows dedication to preserving Dudley House.

"I think it's a splendid appointment," said Thomas A. Bingman '67, assistant does of the College. The Loebs, he added, are "willing to take on the challenge of ensuring that Dudley House students feel attached to this institution and provide all the student services that other Houses provide, services that resident undergraduates receive."

Steven Q. Pizer '85, a student in the Dudley Cooperatives, added, "Dr. Loeb is affable, easy to work with, and I trust him."
