Gray Paint in Adams Gone, But Problems Linger for Pair

By Thomas N. Mowlstt

Two Adams House roommates will over see the gray paint they put on their walls again, but the problems brought on by their decorating efforts threaten to linger.

Julian A. Troget '84 and Morgan K. Belford '85 painted their room white last Wednesday, after College officials threatened to charge them about $2000 to have professionals repaint the suite they had painted gray soon after moving in.

Their room had been part of a five-dorm renovation project this summer that involved overhauls ranging from new roofs to new paint jobs.

But the pair discovered the walls had originally been cast in off-white and painted the rooms the correct color Thursday night.

House Superintendent Edward Dahlstedt inspected the room yesterday and told the roommates professionals would not be needed if they restored, the black radiators their original color, sanded a door and wiped paint off a doorknob, Belford said. Dahistedt could not be reached for comment yesterday.

But the official who supervised the summer renovations indicated that the superintendent's approval would not suffice and that a substantial fine was still possible.

Said R. Thomas Quinn, acting facilities director: "It's not a decision that should be made at the superintendent's level."

"It is a major issue," he added. "My guess is it's a case of a decision that will have to be made at the dean's level."

"The policy I've been given is that there will be no student painting of rooms," said the facilities manager. "If a room's painted by a student, then he has to pay for it to be restored professionally."

"If that's the rule, I think we ought to stick by it."

Treger said he'd been told more facilities officials would inspect the room today.

"I think it looks perfect," he said.
