In the past, Western teams and Eastern teams each received four bids to the NCAA playoffs. The four bids weren't always split evenly among the tow Western leagues-the CCHA and the WCHA The ECAC always received four quarterfinal berths, and two quarterfinal were played on each coast.
As of now, the NCAA has decided to award two quarterfinal berths to each league--one to its champion and one to an at large team.
