Gun-Wielding Robber Strikes Harvard Square Liquor Store

Pointing a gun at the owner's wile and threatening. "Open the register or I'll seat your brains all over the floor," a middle-aged man robbed a Harvard Square liquor store of about $200 Wednesday afternoon, the store's owner said yesterday.

"I was't looking out for that type of problem around here," Joseph Weeks, the owner of Kimberly's liquor store at 1105 Mass Ave between Harvard Yard and the Orson Welles Theater said.

Weeks said his wife was working behind the counter of the couple's business at about 3 p.m. when the robber opened his overcoat, revealing a gun stuffed in his belt.

Threat

According to Weeks, his wife said the as sailant threatened to kill her. He added that the suspect told his wife to go to the back of the store and subsequently fled.

Mrs. Weeks described her assailant to police as a black male, 50 years old, about 5 feet five inches tall, 170 lbs, with brown eyes and wearing a three quarter length coat, a felt hat and dark sweater.

Cambridge Police yesterday were still looking for the suspect.

Weeks said this was the first armed robbery at his store since 1980, when a youth armed with a knife made off with a few dollars."

Judy Kales, the owner of A Propos, a gift shop next door to Kimelli's said yesterday she was concerned about the robbery, but "we don't think the neighborhood is a crime-ridden area."

Weeks said that he plans to have two people in the store from now on Other than that, he said, "we'll keep our eyes open That's the best you can do."

Other incidents in the Harvard area, as reported to Harvard University Police, included.

Freshman Union Thefts:

A wallet-inside a knapsack was reported taken with the sack at lunchtime last Friday, another wallet containing $15 and assorted I D s was reported missing from a knapsack around dinnertime Monday, and a wallet containing $34 was reported taken from a tray around dinnertime Tuesday.

In addition, a London Fog overcoat valued at $125 was reported taken from the first-floor coatroom of the Faculty Club between 7:30 and 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Car Looked:

An AM/FM cassette radio valued at $538 was reported taken from a BMW car in the I.A.B lot between 2 and 5:20 p.m. Friday The victim told police someone had damaged the left rear window and doorframe.

Bicycles Missing:

A victim told police her silver 10 speed bicycle chained to the basement stairway in Lowell House between Feb 4 and last Saturday was missing.

A black and red bicycle with gold strips was reported taken from the Peabody Terrace bicycle cage between noon on Feb 9 and noon last Friday. It was valued at $100.

The larcenies were among ten of less than $100 and three of more than $100 reported to Harvard police during the week ending Thursday.

University Police also warned seven individuals off Harvard property and arrested one juvenile for trespassing at the Science Center.
