6500 To Register Today; 1000 Will Have 'Red Dots'

While many students skied and enjoyed breathtaking vistas from New Hampshire mountaintops this past week, workers in Holyoke Center preparing for today's registration rush hardly came up for air.

"We barely, recovered from running exams and processing grades, and then, we jumped right into registration and classroom preparation," Registrar Margaret E. Law said yesterday. She said several administrative departments combined forces in a mass effort to prepare the approximately 6500 undergraduate registration packets.

About 1000 of those packets will display the dreaded 'red dot,' in dictating that BayBank has not yet received that student's tuition, said Susan Speckman, manager of the term bill office.

"The red dot indicates that the student is not clear to continue the registration process: they will not be able to tile a study card until payment is received," she added.

About the same number of students fail to submit payment before every registration, she said, adding that delays in dealing with the financial aid office often contribute to the students' tardiness.

Unlike registrations past, there will be no general package containing information about different student organizations, said Shela Stall a Registrar's office clerk, because student groups showed little interest
