Netwomen Fly High at Invitational; Doubles, Singles Shine at Tourney

Playing against nationally-ranked competition at the Harvard Invitational Tournament, the Harvard women's tennis team showed this weekend that it can play with anyone.

"I think they did fantastically," Harvard Coach Don Usher said. "I was extremely pleased. It was the best performance of the year."

All for One

Due to NCAA cligibility requirements, the tournament was organized on an individual--and not team--basis. Nonetheless, an unofficial compilation of individual results showed the Crimson had the second-best team performance behind Clemson.

That showing was in front of such national powers as Texas and Florida. And that showing was led by Cyndy Austrian and Kathy Vigna.

Vigna took third place in the "B" singles draw with a 6-4, 6-1 victory in the consolation match.

Vigna also combined with Jackie Farrel to reach the finals of the "A" doubles draw. On the way to the finals, Farrel and Vigna, who had never competed in doubles before, defeated the draw's top seed.

Austrian ran away with the "D" singles division with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over top-seeded Pam Menne of Clemson.

Also victorious for the Crimson was the doubles pairing of Robin Boss and Martha Berkman, who racked up their third title in as many weekends in the "B" division.

The pair is now 12-0 this season.

Overall, it was a weekend of stellar performances for Harvard. "From top to bottom," Usher said, "it was an excellent performance."

The netwomen must now prepare for their most crucial weekend of the fall, October 26 and 27, at the University of Virginia. There the Crimson, the number one ranked team in the East, will face the region's second and third teams--Virginia and William & Mary.
