Phi Beta Kappa Elects 24 Seniors

The Alpha chapter of Phi Beta Kappa has elected 24 Harvard seniors to its membership.

Students were chosen for "uniform excellence in academic and intellectual activities," said Dean of the College L. Fred Jewell '57, who has participated in the selection process for 20 years.

Jewell said that students are elected to Phi Beta Kappa by a three-stage process: 12 juniors are elected in the spring of their junior year, 24 seniors in the fall of their senior year, and an additional 55-65 seniors just prior to graduation.

These students are chosen only from the top of their class, and their total number never can exceed 10 percent of each graduating class.

Carroll, Economics, Lowell House; Timothy C. Chang, Applied Mathematics, Lowell House; Timothy C. Chang, Applied Mathematics, Lowell House; David, H. Chin, Chemistry, Quincy House; Michael S. Dettelbach, History and Science, Quincy House; Philip R. Dormitzer, Anthropology, Dunster House; Glenn D. Ellison, Mathematics, Currier House; Stephen A. Engel, Computer Science, Eliot House; Jesse M. Fried, Economics, Winthrop House; Riyaz A. Kanji, Social Studies, Quincy House; Richard D. Katz, Applied Mathematics, Leverell House; Nicholas R. Lawrence, English and American Language and Literature, North House; Mark Lee, Physics, Winthrop House; Daniel E. Lieberman, Anthropology, Currier House; Neil B. These students will be inducted at a special ceremony on January 10.
