For the Harvard men's tennis team, Saturday's 9-0 victory over Penn wasn't the ordinary 9-0 shellacking that the Crimson has administered with regularly this year.
Instead, the netmen (10-3 overall 3-0 Eastern intercollegiate Collegiate Team Association) overcame a good deal of adversity in gaining their second crucial league triumph of the weekend.
The adversity came from Penn's first singles sport, a occupied by Venezuelan Dasis Cup team member Rudolph Scheller, the visitor's first couples team--which had beaten. Harvard twice this year--and the euphoria which followed Friday's key victory over Columbia.
But the Crimson skillfully sliced through each of these barriers. "We played a really good match," said Cuntab Coach Dave Fish. "The score sounds like we crushed them, but all along I've talked about them being one of the toughest teams in the league."
Larry Scott ran into a lot of this toughness in his first singles match with Scheller Down 5-2 in the third set, the junior co-captain railed to send the set into a tie breaker-which hen won, 7-5 on a diving volley.
Bill Stanley, Dave Beckman, Peter Palandjian won straight sets victors at second third fourth and sixth respectively while Darryl Laddin won a come form behind three set math at number five.
The day's second great stand came at first doubles where the Crimson tandem of Scott and Arkie Engle faced a Quaker due who had been a nemisis for the netman all year.
Scott and Engle left no doubt which was the better team Saturday, though, with a convening 6-0, 6-4 victory.
