Twelve Radcliffe juniors have gained election to the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society, one of the college's highest academic distinctions.

The recipients, with their House affiliations and fields of concentration, are Lisa I. Backus, Lowell, Psychology and Social Relations: Nancy L. Boris, Quincy, Sociology: Micki Chen, Leverett, History and Science. Carole I. Chervin, Lowell, Sociology; Mary D. Garrison, Dunster. History and Literature; Vivian S. Lee, Currier, Biochemical Sciences; Nina A. Mendelson, Quincy, Economics; Deborah F. Minehart, Leverett, Mathematics: Anne E. Monius, Dunster, Comparative Study of Religion; Tracy L. Monroe, Cabot, English and American Literature and Language; Linda J. Runyon, Winthrop, Classics: Rena J. Zieve, Dunster, Biology.

The 12 women were selected by a 10-member committee of professors, alumni, and senior members of the honor society. Twenty-four juniors were elligible for the honor on the basis of their grade point averages said Judith A. Kates, president of the national organization's . . .assachusetts chapter.

Kates said Phi Beta Kappa elections are based on grades and faculty references. The prestigious society was "designed to acknowledge outstanding scholarly achievement," she added.

Each of the newest Kappans will receive a certificate of membership and a book prize at a May 6 induction ceremony.

In addition, the top 12 percent of the Class of '85 will be elected to the society in May or June, Kates said.
