For Ourselves And Others

The decision to install grates over the heating vents at Leverett House is appalling. It is unfortunate that the Dowlings did not perceive the opportunity which the grates provided as one allowing us to offer service to others less fortunate than ourselves. We have few opportunities of this sort in life, certainly far too few to waste through poor judgement. More creative solutions to the reported security risk posed by the homeless could have been developed through involvement of the Leverett community. That there was no effort to involve the community is a sad commentary on the management of this issue. Practical solutions to the problem are obvious. Students can be expected to ensure greater security by forming escort service for those concerned about the homeless men, or by agreeing to walk in pairs to the dining hall for meals. Our responsibility to ourselves means that we must have responsibility for others. There is still time to act responsibly. Peter S.
