Bok Visits Holworthy Freshmen

By Karen W. Levy

For the freshmen in Holworthy Hall's middle entry, yesterday was a day to write home about.

After weeks of preparation and anticipation, the 30 students had an opportunity to party with Mass Hall's top dog, President Derek C. Bok.

The invitation, the brainchild of Yardling Gil Citro '90, at first requested Bok's presence for a date in mid-October.

"We had to keep changing the date and time," said George C. Wardit '90. "We didn't think it would work out, so we were so happy when the office called and said he could come."

"The funniest thing was deciding what not to say or do when he came," said Waldrit.

An Awkward Moment

Bok greeted each student personally, and then, finding a scarcity of chairs, took a seat on the floor. Then, after an awkward moment, the freshmen joined him.

The hour-and-a-half conversation moved from course difficulty to students' reasons for coming to Harvard to general complaints about the University. Between the questions and anecdotes, the hosts passed out hot cider, cheese and crackers and cheesecake.
