Women Spikers Sweep

The Harvard women's volleyball team defeated Wheaton College in straight sets yesterday, 15-6, 15-7, 15-12, to end its six-game losing streak and bring its overall season record to 4-13.

"The whole team did really well," sophomore netter Susan Nemes said. "Everyone got a chance to play and no one was really outstanding--we all did it together."

Despite the absence of junior Suzie Tapson and freshman Manda Schossberger--two of the team's top starters--the netters were able to break their losing slide.

"Wheaton wasn't very strong," senior Stephanie Salinas said. "It was fun. There was a different attitude than from before when we realized we could beat them."

The netters will play the University of Connecticut next Tuesday at Harvard to close out their regular season play, but are looking further down the road to the Ivy League Championship Tournament, which will be held November 14-16 in Malkin Athletic Center.

"I think our chances in the tournament are good," Harvard Coach Wayne Lem said. "During the season we've faced the same teams and come close to winning many times. Having close matches has given us a good psychological edge--we're going to be hungry."

Lem--coaching his first year of Harvard volleyball after 10 years at Boston College--believes that the team's continuous progress will also increase its chances for doing well in the Ivy tourney.
